Drinking to Success

Improving Your Health 1 Smoothie at a Time!

One thing Linda and I get asked about on a frequent basis is about our morning smoothie. I’ve been anxious to write about this for quite some time, and actually document what we do, why we do it, and the overall value to your health as a result.

To be honest, I was a big skeptic for a long time regarding the whole organic food movement. I mean, after all, isn’t this just a cleverly designed ploy by the organic food industry to convince us to spend considerable sums of money on food? I’m sure many of you feel this way. However, I’d urge you look beyond this knee-jerk reaction and investigate for yourself so you can come to your own conclusion. This is exactly what Linda and I did.

Everything you eat each day has a compounding effect

We’ve touched on this subject in the past, but with the soaring cost of healthcare, it’s in your best interest to invest in yourself and in your SELF-CARE. Your body, your mood, your outlook, your energy, your everything will thank you for it. Just as Darrin Hardy wrote about in The Compound Effect, everything you eat each day has a compounding effect until one day, you find yourself in a very unhealthy situation. You’re overweight, you have chronic inflammation, no energy, pre-diabetic, and the list goes on and on. It’s in your best interest to change this immediately and have the compound effect start working to your benefit as opposed to your detriment.

You can start with your morning routine and more specifically, how you fuel your body each morning to have the best opportunity for a happy and productive day. Enough said? Let’s dive into the concoction that we’ve built, tweaked and refined over the last several years.

The good news is that the ingredients you go through the most frequently are available at Costco and they’re considerably cheaper than at the grocery store. Costco hasn’t always had these but they do now and we’re loving it.  For blending, we’ve used the NutriBullet (also sold at Costco) for the past several years. It is simply fantastic.

The morning smoothie ready for action!

We start with 2 small handfuls of the Organic Superfood Power Greens mix, from Costco.

It’s a blend of Kale, Spinach, and Chard. Kale itself is a Superfood that is known to specifically fight against cancer causing agents and aids the body’s detoxification system. It’s a big bag and lasts a long time. Blueberries are said to be one of the world’s healthiest foods and are loaded with antioxidants. They will help your nervous system, brain health, and memory. We buy these Organic frozen blueberries from Costco as well, and include 1 cup. Next goes in 1 cup of Organic Almond Milk which is also purchased from Costco. These are the ingredients that you burn through the most often. Costco has done us all a favor by carrying these in abundance!

We then use 1 scoop of Dream Protein which is available through Amazon. Everyone has their spin on the protein powder of their choice, so use one that is best for you. Pay attention to calories, carbs, cholesterol, and sodium as an example. Taken from their website: “Dream Protein leads the “whey” with its proprietary Hormone-Free, Ultra-LowTemp™ Whey Protein Isolate. We start with hormone free whey from New Zealand cows that are “Meadow Fed” and not given any rBGH or BST hormones!”  It has no MSG, no soy, no sugar, no fructose, no aspartame or sucrose.

One of the secret weapon ingredients we use is 1 scoop of Mighty Maca, available through Amazon. This is a powerful ingredient too! It’s derived from the Peruvian Super Root called Maca and it combines a collection of the world’s most amazing superfoods into one formulation. It supports hormonal balance, adrenals, reduces inflammation, supports detoxification, digestion, brain function, heart and circulatory system, boosts immunity, is Gluten and dairy free among many other things.

Next, we add one tablespoon of Nopalina Flax Seed (available at Walmart or Amazon) which supports healthy digestion and Omega 3, 6 & 9. Lastly, one teaspoon of raw almond butter (available at WinCo) is added for creaminess and texture. Add a bit of crushed ice and about a 1/2 cup of water then blend. The result is an extremely good smoothie that you’d expect to get at Jamba Juice.

It tastes very good and provides everything your body needs to have an empowered day

It tastes very good and provides everything your body needs to have an empowered day. All this for 360 calories! We’ve also discovered that it works quite effectively to blend our vitamins up in our smoothie. We’ll discuss what vitamin regimen we personally use in an upcoming article, so stay tuned.

One thing worth noting; as you do start to eat healthy, you will encounter a detoxification period where you will most likely feel worse as your body purges all the toxins that it’s been holding onto. You’ll want to plan to be drinking a great deal of water during this time.

As you embark on your journey towards SELF-CARE, we’ll toast our smoothie in the air with you. Here’s to a new and healthier you!

All the best,
